Current loop and

magnetic dipole

 



 

1) consider a current carrying loop as shown in the diagram.



2) The direction of current flow is anticlockwise as shown in the diagram.



3) From right hand thumb rule, it can be found that the upper face behaves like a north pole and lower face is south pole.



4) The magnetic dipole has a dipole moment say (M) it is found that




 

Where I is the current on the loop

And A is the area of the loop



5) Therefore



6) it is found that   k = 1

So,

M  =  IA



Suppose there have N no of turns in the loop, then total magnetic moment is

M  =  N IA


And it’s direction is along the area vector.
